Organisms maintain homeostasis in the face of changing conditions by interpreting environmental signals and translating them into appropriate biochemical and biological outputs. Crucial for all these processes is the correct operation of signaling pathways in cells and tissues. SMICH offers structured, interdiscipinary training and competitive PhD projects inverstigating how signaling mechanisms impact homeostasis in cell-free, cell-based, and organismal systems. We specifically focus on the highly topical role of autophagy in different processes and studying autophagic mechanisms in depth.

Most faculty members are part of the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL) a joint venture of Medical University of Vienna or University of Vienna. MFLP is embedded in the Campus Vienna Biocenter (VBC).  VBC is a leading international biomedical research center with a staff of more than 1400 scientists and 1000 students from over 40 nations, with a dynamic research environment and a culture that promotes scientific exchange and co-operation. Scientific core facilities at MFPL and the Vienna Biocenter Core Facilities support the researchers with state of the art infrastructure, equipment and know how.
