INSIDE – The dark side of the cell – PhD Symposium

11.-12. February 2021

In our Symposium we were joined by top-notch scientists for a journey through the unsolved mysteries of the cell, covering topics ranging from proteostasis to stem cell biology, from nuclear organization to immunology, from structural biology to autophagy.

The symposium, organized by our students, was a great success with great presentations from our students and fantastic speakers from all over the world:

Program – February 11

SESSION 1 : AUTOPHAGY AND PROTEOSTASIS

Ivan Dikic “ER-phagy and neuropathologies”

Thorsten Hoppe “Stressed Out: Posttranscriptional Proteostasis Regulation”

Brenda Schulman “How Cullin-RING ligases ubiquitylate their substrates”

Peter Tompa “Tripartite degron model: the role of structural disorder in coordinated protein degradation in the cell”

SESSION 2: SIGNALLING IN HEALTH AND DISEASE

Dario Alessi “Interplay between LRRK2 kinase and Rab GTPases in Parkinson’s disease”

Chiara Ambrogio “Insights into KRAS biology to identify novel therapeutic strategies for cancer”

Michael Eck “Pharmacologic insights from cryo-EM structures of autoinhibited and active-state structures of BRAF/MEK/14-3-3 complexes”

Luke O’Neill “Adventures in inflammation research”

Gioacchino Natoli “Keeping transcription focused: a novel checkpoint that selectively limits extragenic transcription”

Program – February 12

SESSION 1 : STEM CELLS

Austin Smith “Pluripotency: one cell for all”

Jonathan Chubb “Single cell decision making during development and dedifferentiation”

Paulina Latos “Repressive mechanisms governing trophoblast identity”

Maria Carolina Florian “Aging of hematopoietic stem cells: epigenetic drift and remodeling of the niche”

Sara Wickström “Nuclear mechanotransduction: regulation of cell fate and integrity”

SESSION 2: NUCLEAR ORGANIZATION

Susana Gonzalo “Danger of self-DNA accumulation in the cytoplasm during aging”

Ulrike Kutay “Inside Out – Taking Apart the Nuclear Envelope for Open Mitosis”

Colin Stewart “LINC complex disruption as a way to treat laminopathies”

Fabrizio d’Adda di Fagagna “DNA damage response: threat and opportunities”
