SMICH Workshop “Communication Skills”

5.-6. September 2024

Presentations are a fundamental part of a scientist’s life, whether at lab meetings, conferences, retreats, outreach events, or campus seminars. Despite us doing it all the time, I only know few who felt comfortable with it from the start. The more common reactions are stage fright, anxiety, imposter syndrome, nervousness, … and even without these feelings, delivering a compelling presentation is no easy task. So many things need to be considered like audience, time constraints, storytelling, data presentation, and overall structure.

The good news is one can work on it and things can become easier 😊
Hence, we are excited to offer a 2-day workshop on communication and presentation skills for you SMICH students, hosted by Malcolm Love:
Day 1: General techniques such as voice training, handling stage fright, and engaging with the audience.
Day 2: Specific techniques including structuring your talk, crafting a story around your project, and using visuals effectively.
Date: September 5th-6th, 2024

Malcolm has conducted workshops on campus before, and some of you might already know him. He brings a wealth of experience from his career as a journalist, a senior producer for the BBC, and a presenter of the weekly radio show “Love and Science.” His workshops are interactive and designed to create an encouraging environment where participants feel comfortable experimenting. The format includes presentations from Malcolm, group exercises, and feedback.
